The cabin, which consisted of two rooms separated by a hallway and a bedroom was constructed on 24-26.5.1703 of hewn pine-tree logs and covered with shingles (small feather edged pinewood planks), painted with brick-like patterns on the outside and upholstered with white linen in a Hollandaise manner inside. The tiled stove faced with Dutch tiles survived to the present day. The cabin served as Peter the Great’s St. Petersburg residence. In 1723 following his order a roofed gallery was constructed over the house, and in 1844 the house was covered with a brick case (architect R. I. Kuzmin). In 1875 the garden in front of the cabin was decorated with a bronze bust of Peter the Great (sculptor P.P.Zabello). In 1930 the museum was opened, and a restoration project followed in 1971-76 (architect А. E. Hessen). The exposition contains Peter's authentic personal belongings, some 18th century objects, and materials on the history of the Northern War of 1700-21, and the foundation of St. Petersburg (including the pussy-willow boat built by Peter himself, according to a legend). The cabin is a section of Peter the Great’s Summer Garden and Palace Museum.

References: Зязева Л. К. Домик Петра I: Путеводитель по музею. Л., 1983.

N. L.
