Lived in Leningrad in 1932-56. Graduated from the 1st Musical Institute (then located at 11 Tchaikovskogo Street; today known as the Mussorgsky Music School, at 36 Mokhovaya Street) and the Conservatory in composition under D.D. Shostakovich (1941). During his stay in Leningrad he wrote the cycle for vocals Country of Fathers, after A. Isaakyan (1949), a cycle of songs after R. Burns (1955), the poem for vocal and symphony Memory of Sergey Esenin (1956) and many others, all of which were considered classics. Sviridov became a favourite among Petersburg public serious about music. The premiers of his compositions were impatiently anticipated, filling the concert halls with people. Sviridov is considered to have expressed Esenin's poetic daring in music, though his musical legacy includes a harsh note resounding from Blok, heard not only in his romances, but also in his choir compositions, and written in the style of Spiritual Orthodox Music. He acted as a Secretary of the Composers Union of the USSR (1962-74), and the 1st Secretary of the Composers Union of the RSFSR (1968-73). He was awarded the Stalin Prize (1946), the State Prize of the USSR (1968, 1980), the Lenin Prize (1960), and the State Prize of the RF (1994). From 1941 till his death he lived at 15 Liteiny Avenue.

Work: Music as Fate. Moscow, 2002.

References: Сохор А. Н. Георгий Свиридов. 2-е изд., доп.
