Worked in theatre from 1898. In 1904-05 he worked as an actor for the Komissarzhevskaya Theatre in St. Petersburg. In 1907, he founded the Free Theatre in Terioki (today Zelenogorsk), where he staged plays banned by censorship. In 1913 he began working in the cinema. Together with Y.A. Protazanov, he made a screen version of the novel War and Peace (1915). He went on to direct 58 feature films, including Cross and Mauser (1925), Poet and Tsar (1926), and Kastus Kalinovsky (1927). He played in 43 films, among them Counterplan (1932), The Golovlyov Family (part of Iudushka, 1934), Peter the Great (1939), and Anton Ivanovich Gets Angry (1941). In 1919, Gardin founded the First State Cinema School (today VGIK, All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography) in Moscow. From 1926, he worked at Lenfilm studio. In 1927-65, he lived at 9 Potemkinskaya Street (memorial plaque installed). In 1934, he built Tatyanino Dacha, named after his wife, actress Tatyana Dmitrievna Bulakh-Gardina, in Lisy Nos (15 Morskaya Street), where he collected paintings and antiques. D.D. Shostakovich, N.K. Cherkasov, P.P. Kadochnikov, and others used to visit his summer residence. After the war, Gardin donated the dacha to a kindergarten, but in the early 1950s the building was demolished. He was buried at Bogoslovskoe Cemetery. Written works include Memoirs: In 2 volumes (Moscow, 1949-1952); The Life and Work of an Artist (Moscow, 1960, with the help of T.D. Bulakh).

References: Фильмы и роли В. Р. Гардина.
