He lived in St. Petersburg from 1759. He was a student in the Academy of Arts in 1761-67, a retainer thereof in Paris in 1767-70 and Rome in 1770-72, and professor in 1794. He revised the plastic ideas of the French rococo and Russian classicism to develop his own style of portrait bust sculpture based on an analytical, naturalist approach to reveal the complex inner life of the portraitee. The majority of his sculptures are made of marble, with which he achieved the most delicate textural effects. He made the portraits of Count P. A. Rumyantsev-Zadunaysky in 1778, Count B. P. Sheremetev in 1782, G. A. Potemkin, Prince of Tauride, in 1791, Prince N. V. Repnin in 1791, Admiral V. Y. Chichagov in 1791, M. V. Lomonosov in 1792, Empress Catherine II in 1789 and 1791, Emperor Pavel I in 1797, all of them in the Russian Museum. He also sculptured statues and reliefs for the Marble Palace in 1775-82 and the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky Lavra in 1786-89 and Catherine II the Legislator for the Tauride Palace in 1789-90, now kept in the Russian Museum. He was buried at Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery, his remains and monument moved to the Necropolis of the 18th Century in 1935. A monument to Shubin by sculptor V. A. Sinaisky and architect S. B. Speransky was placed in Mikhailovsky Garden in 1959.

Reference: Лазарева О. П. Русский скульптор Федот Шубин. М., 1965; Яковлева Н. А. Федот Иванович Шубин, 1740-1805. Л., 1984.

O.
