\n \n DEMUT-MALINOVSKY Vasily Ivanovich (1779 - 1846, St. Petersburg), sculptor. Studied at the Academy of Arts (1785-1800) under M.I. Kozlovsky, and received a retainer from the Academy of Arts to study in Rome (1803-06). From 1808 he taught at the Academy of Arts, gaining professorship in 1813, and directorship of the Sculpture Department in 1836. His was decorative-monumental work in the Empire style, naturally connecting a classical architectural style to buildings designed by A.N. Voronikhin, A.D. Zakharova, or K.I. Rossi. His famous works include Proserpine's Abduction by Pluto group (for the building of the Mine Institute, 1809-11), Statue of St. Andrew (1811) for Kazan Cathedral, the Chariot of Glory, the Allegory of Glory at the General Staff's attic (1827-29), Minerva Statue for the Imperial Public Library attic (1830-31; see Russian National Library), the Chariot of Glory, Warrior and Horse Figures for the Narva (1827-32), sculpture decoration of the Mikhailovsky Castle (1823-25), and the Senate and Synod building (1832-33). He is the creator of mounted and memorial sculptures such as Russian Scaevola (1813, the State Russian Museum), and the gravestones of M.I. Kozlovsky (1803) and A.N. Voronikhin (1814), both in the Necropolis of the 18th century. He supervised sculptures made for St. Petersburg palaces and parks. He lived in his own house at 5 Sixth Line of Vasilievsky Island. He was buried at Smolenskoe Cemetery in 1937, and his ashes were carried to Necropolis of Artists.
