Full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, People's Artist of the USSR (1963), chairman of the management board for Leningrad Department of the Union of Artists (1962-72, 1986-90), Hero of Socialist Labour (1977), honorary citizen of St. Petersburg (1997). Studied at Academy of Arts (1937-41, 1945-47) under V.A. Sinaisky and A.T. Matveev; taught there since 1947. Anikushin represented traditionalism in the Soviet school of sculpture. His most important work is a monument to Alexander Pushkin at Arts Square (bronze and granite, installed in 1957; awarded the Lenin Prize 1958), which fits the classic architecture of the square. He was the creator of monuments to V.M. Bekhterev in front of the Psycho-Neurological Institute building (1960), Alexander Pushkin at Pushkinskaya metro station (1955) and Chernaya Rechka metro station (1982), V.I. Lenin at Moscovskaya Square (1970), Heroic Defenders of Leningrad at Pobedy Square (1975), grave-side monuments to E.P. Korchagina-Alexandrova (1958), Y.M. Yuryev (1961), and N.K. Cherkasov (1975), all in Necropolis of Artists, and many portraits. From 1961 he lived at 16 Pesochnaya Embankment (memorial plaque installed), with his studio located at 14 Pesochnaya Embankment. He was buried at Literatorskie Mostky. Anikushin's name is given to Anikushinskaya Alley (1999) and Anikushinsky Park (2001), both between Kamennoostrovsky Avenue and Vyazemsky Lane.

References: Замошкин А. И.
