He studied in the Academy of Arts (1773-88) under Semen Shchedrin, then became a pensioner in Rome (1789-94), an academic (1795), and a counsellor in the Academy of Arts (1802). In 1808-21 he served as set designer in the Imperial Theatre Board of Directors. Martynov is best known for his exquisite and poetic graphic cycles dedicated to St. Petersburg and its surroundings (in particular, Tsarskoe Selo): Views of Count Stroganov's Summer House, Chernaya Rechka and the Kamenny Island (10 etchings, 1813-14); The Neva River Embankment (six etchings, 1817); Views of St. Petersburg and its Environments (over 50 lithographs, the early 1820s). He took part in painting interiors of the palaces in Pavlovsk, Gatchina and Tsarskoe Selo. Martynov created the set of graphic series based on his impressions of trips to Urga (today Ulan Bator, 1805 as a member of the Russian Embassy) and the Baltic Sea coast (1810, as a member of the Empress Elizaveta Alexeevna's retinue). In 1824, he left for Italy.

Reference: Андрей Ефимович Мартынов, 1768-1826: Акварель, рисунок, гравюра, литография: Кат. Л., 1977.

O. L. Leikind, D.Y.
