\n \n VASNETSOV Yury Alexeevich (1900-1973, Leningrad), graphic artist, painter, People's Artist of RSFSR (1966). From 1921, he lived in St. Petersburg and studied in the Academy of Arts (1921-26) under Alexey Karev, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, and Nikolay Tyrsa; in the Institute of Artistic Culture (1926-28) under Kazimir Malevich, and at the post-graduate course of All-Russian Academy of Arts (1932-34) under Vladimir Lebedev. From 1928, he worked in the Leningrad department of Detgiz publishing house. Vasnetsov's works were inspired by the poetic nature of Russian folklore and folk art. His best known illustrations are of Russian fairy tails, songs and puzzles (Lev Tolstoy's Three Bears, 1930; Magic Ring, 1947; Tale in Ones Face, 1948; Ladushki, 1964; Rainbow’s Bow, 1969, the State Prize of the USSR, 1971). He created separate colour etchings (Teremok, 1943; Rabbit’s Hut, 1948). Vasnetsov’s refined works in the primitive style (A Woman and a Mouse, The Still Life with a Hat and a Bottle, 1932-34, the State Russian Museum) were uncovered only after his death. He lived at 4 the First Line of Vasilievsky Island (1950 - 1960s) and at 16 Pesochnaya Embankment (1960-70s).
