\n \n MANIZER Matvey Genrikhovich (1891-1966), sculptor, People's Artist of the USSR (1958), chairman of the management board of Leningrad Department of the Union of Artists of Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (1937-41), member (1947) and Vice-President (1947-66) of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. Studied at the Central School of Technical Drawing (1908-09), at the Drawing School of the Society of Art Promotion (1909-11), and finally at the Academy of Arts (1911-16) under G.R. Zaleman and V.A. Beklemishev. He created a number of works in St. Petersburg which became classics of Socialist Realism, including monuments to V. Volodarsky at Obukhovskoy Oborony Avenue (1925), Victims of January 9, 1905, at Obukhov station (1931), I.E. Repin's bust in Rumyantsevsky Garden (bronze, the 1950s; installed in 1999), and the monuments to V.I. Lenin and I.V. Stalin, which also served the base for many copies. He authored works on art and art education, taught at the Academy of Arts (1921-29, 1935-41 and 1945-47), and led the Leningrad creative workshop of sculpture at the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1948-52). In 1941 he moved to Moscow. He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1941, 1943, and 1950). His name was given to the Monument Sculpture Plant.
