He studied at the Academy of Arts (1849-64) under P.V. Basin. From 1862 to 1870 he was a retainer of the Academy of Arts in Paris and Rome. In the meantime, from 1860 to 1869, Chistyakov taught at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts and at the Academy of Arts from 1872. He was elected a fellow of the Academy of Arts in 1893, to assume the post of professor and head of the mosaic department in 1890, which he held until 1912. He developed his own teaching methods which combined the best traditions of the academic school and the experience of the direct perception of nature. His methods contributed to the development of realism in Russian art to a considerable extent. Among his students were V.M. Vasnetsov, M.A. Vrubel, V.D. Polenov, I.E. Repin, V.A. Serov and V.I. Surikov. Chistyakov performed paintings on historical subjects and genre portraits: Grand Princess Sofia Vitovtovna at the Wedding of Grand Prince Vasily the Dark (1861), The Last Minutes of Messalina (1864), The Portrait of the Mother of a Painter (1883, all of them reposited in the State Russian Museum), Boyar (1876, in the State Tretyakov Gallery). He was buried at Kazanskoe Cemetery in Pushkin. A memorial plaque was set up on the house where Chistyakov lived (the town of Pushkin, 21 Moskovskoe Freeway; set up in1876-77, architect A.K. Kolbe). In 1985 the house was converted into a museum of P. Chistyakov.

Works: Letters, Notebooks, and Memoirs. Moscow, 1953.

References: Молева Н. М., Белютин Э. М. П. П.
