He attended the workshops of A.Y. Radig and I.S. Klauber at the Academy of Arts from 1785 to 1800; in 1803-14 he held an Academy scholarship in Paris. From 1815 onwards he was teaching at the Academy of Arts, to assume the office of the head of printmaking department in 1817 and became a professor of the Academy in 1831. He held various museum positions, such as a curator of printmaking at the Hermitage in 1817-60 and the custodian at the Museum of the Academy of Arts (1841-54). Utkin performed engraved portraits of prominent Russian historical and cultural figures: I.A. Krylov (1816, from the drawing by O.A. Kiprensky), A.V. Suvorov (1818, from the original painting by I.G. Schmidt), N.M. Karamzin (1818, from the original painting by A.G. Varnek), Alexander Pushkin (1827 and 1838; based on the theme of Kiprensky's canvas). He also made twenty engravings from the medallions of F.P. Tolstoy dedicated to the Patriotic War of 1812, performed prints from subject paintings and book vignettes. The intrinsic characteristic of Utkin's prints lies in the imaginative revision of the original along with the vast diversity of line techniques. He lived at 25 Fontanka River Embankment, and moved into the building of the Academy of Arts in 1816. He was buried at Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery, with his remains and tombstone transferred to the Necropolis of Artists in 1936.

References: Принцева Г. А. Николай Иванович Уткин, 1780-1863.
