The wife of Prince V.N. Tenishev. Studied at the Central School for Technical Drawing under Y.F. Tsionglinsky and I.E. Repin and at the Academy of R. Julien in Paris. In 1894 she founded painting and drawing studio under the guidance of Repin, housed in the family mansion (13 Galernaya Street). Gathered an extensive collection of water-colours by Russian and foreign painters, A.N. Benois worked on its systematization (in 1898 about 500 works were donated to the Russian Museum). Financed Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) journal, took part in the organisation of journal's exhibitions, helped S.P. Dyagilev to arrange an exhibition of Russian Art in Paris (1906). Created a centre for applied folk art in Talashkino estate of Smolenskaya Province, where in the late 1890s - early 1900s Petersburg and Moscow artists stayed and worked (S.V. Malyutin, M.V. Vrubel, N.K. Roerich, P.P. Trubetskoy, etc.). Practiced enamel and inlaying, created decorative dishes, altar crosses and icons. Carried out theoretic and experimental research in the sphere of enamel art (Doctor of Science, 1916), the author of the monograph Enamel and Inlays (Prague, 1930). In 1918 emigrated to France. In Voskresson near Paris she arranged a workshop of artistic enamel. The author of memoirs My Life Impressions (Leningrad, 1991).<br/><br/>Reference: Журавлева Л. С. Княгиня Мария Тенишева.
