\n \n MATE Vasily Vasilievich (1856-1917, Petrograd) engraver and teacher. He studied at the School of Drawing at the Artists Encouragement Fund in1870-75, under L. A. Seryakov, and at the Academy of Arts in 1875-80, under F. I. Iordan. He was a retainer of the Academy of Arts in Paris from 1880 to 1883. He was a master of reproductions, etchings and word carvings. He executed numerous portraits of Russian artistic figures from photos and paintings, for example the portrait of V. V. Stasov, 1894, from the original by I. E. Repin; the portrait of Alexander Pushkin, 1899, from the original by O. A. Kiprensky; M. P. Musorgsky, 1881; the portrait of M. A. Vrubel, 1902; the portrait of Leo Tolstoy, 1910, all made from photos. He also made reproductions of paintings by A. A. Ivanov, I. E. Repin, V. I. Surikov. His longstanding pedagogical work at the Central College of Technical Drawing that lasted from 1884 until 1909, at the School of Drawing of the Artists' Encouragement Fund from 1911, and at the Academy of Arts from 1894 to 1917, was important for the development of original print art in Russia. His students included N. N. Gerardov, M. V. Dobuzhinsky, A. P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva, I. N. Pavlov, M. V. Rundaltsov, V. D. Falileev, P. A. Shillingovsky.
