\n \n MATVEEV Andrey Matveevich (between 1701 and 1704-1739, St. Petersburg) artist. He was the first Russian artist to ever receive a western European art education, having studied in Amsterdam in 1716-25 and in Antwerp in 1725-27 as a retainer of Peter the Great. He was an Artist to the Imperial Court from 1724. In 1727, he became the head of the painters' company for the Building's Chancellery, in charge of decorative painting of palace and church interiors in cooperation with D. Trezzini and M. G. Zemtsov. He executed a series of Gospel compositions in St. Peter&Paul Cathedral: Feast of the Purification, Praying about the Chalice, among others, 1728-33. He painted allegorical compositions: Allegory of Painting, 1725, exhibited in the State Russian Museum. He was one of the first among the Russian artists to paint secular portraits, Self-portrait with Wife, 1729, exhibited at the State Russian Museum).
