P, Publishing House of, was founded in 1885 by Peter Petrovich Soykin (1862-1938). It published natural-science literature (works by C. Darwin, K. E. Tsiolkovsky, A. E. Brem, I. V. Michurin etc.), social and political literature, collected works by Russian and foreign writers in many volumes (including those by J. Verne, C. Dickens, A. Dumas, F. Cooper, Mark Twain), and also over 10 scientific-educational journals: the World of Adventures (1910-18, 1922-30), Nature and People (1889-1918, 1927-29) etc. In 1905-06, it published newspapers Obnovlennaya Rossiya and Sovremennaya Zhizn (banned by the censor). It was nationalised in 1918. It resumed operation in 1922, it also published Zhurnal Dlya Usovershenstvovaniya Vrachey (1923-29) and Vestnik Znaniya (1925). The Newest Encyclopedic Dictionary was published in 1926-27 (issues 1-12). In total Soykin published over one thousand books and periodicals in 80 million editions. In 1930, the publishing house joined the Leningrad Regional Publishing House. The publishing house and the printing office were situated on 51 Voznesensky Avenue from 1885, from 1886, it was situated at 47 Voznesensky Avenue, from 1892 at 12 Stremyannaya Street; the publishing house was situated on 8 Stremyannaya Street after October 1917.<br/><br/>References: Адмиральский А.
