\n \n TRUTEN (The Drone), a literary weekly, published by N. I. Novikov in 1769-70. The Тruten was a response to Catherine II's call in the Vsyakaya Vsyachina journal to establish Russian satiric journalism. The journal came out in the printing house of the Academy of Sciences with a circulation of 1200 copies (1769), and 750 in 1770. The release total was 53 issues (leaflets). Truten's staff contributors among others were D. I. Fonvizin, F. А. Emin, V. I. Maykov. The journal's satire was targeted primarily against public vice, which unlike the one vaguely exposed in Vsyakaya Vsyachina, was here personified. It took the view that public vice emanated from the individual character. Truten's satire did not spare the Empress. The polemics between the Truten and Vsyakaya Vsyachina became St. Petersburg's most significant literary event of the late 1760s. Truten was continuously harassed by censorship.
