It was founded in July 1969 as an organ of the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Communist Youth League, the Union of Writers of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and the Leningrad Writers Organisation. Among others Olga Berggolts, G. Y. Gorbovsky, G. A. Goryshin, M. A. Dudin, V. K. Ketlinskaya, S. S. Orlov, Y. Rytkheu at various times made up the editorial board. Since 1981 E. A. Shevelev has held the editor's post. The journal published works of both unfledged and prominent authors, critical and publicist articles, art reviews etc. The works of F. А. Abramov, V. I. Belov, D. А. Granin, F. А. Iskander, V. V. Konetsky, V. А. Kurochkin, V. F. Panova, L. Panteleev, L. S. Petrushevskaya, V. S. Pikul, V. А. Rozhdestvensky, T. N. Tolstaya (in 1983 she made her first literary appearance in this journal), V. S. Shefner, V. М. Shukshin, L. V. Uspensky and many other authors were published in the journal. A number of publications of the 1970-80s evoked a large public response and triggered censorship rows of the Аvrora. In the second half of the 1980s articles devoted to the rock-culture (also the Leningrad one) enjoyed popularity; magnetic albums, music awards, rock-festivals were held under the aegis of the Avrora. Since the early 1990s the journal has faced financial hardships; came out irregularly and is gradually loosing its original significance. The editorial office at various times was located at 37 Tavricheskaya Street; 9 Liteiny Avenue; 3 Aptekarsky Lane. In 2002 it appeared as the almanac Journal Avrora printed six times a year.

D. N.
