\n \n MARX Adolf Fedorovich (1838-1904, St. Petersburg), publisher. An emigrant from Germany, he came to St. Petersburg in 1859 summoned by booksellers F.A. Bitepazh and I.K. Kalugin to arrange the German section of their book trade. In 1869 Marx launched his own publishing company. His editions mostly included books on literature, art and history. He had been issuing a weekly Niva journal from 1870, its supplements contained collected works of Russian and foreign writers (such as A.S. Griboedov, N.V. Gogol, I.A. Goncharov, F.M. Dostoevsky, V.A. Zhukovsky, M.V. Lomonosov, A.N. Maykov, Y.P. Polonsky, H. Heine, M. Maeterlinck, J.B. Moliere, E. Rostand, O. Wilde and many others). The office of the publishing house was situated at 22 Malaya Morskaya Street, while its printing house was accomodated at 29 Izmaylovsky Avenue. After the death of Marx the publishing house was reorganised into A.F. Marx' Association of Publishing and Printing Joint-Stock Company. He was buried at the cemetery of Novodevichy Monastery.
