He graduated from Gurevich Petrograd Private School (1917), studied at Law Faculty of Petrograd University and High Courses of Art Criticism at the Institute of Arts History. He was a member of the Poets' Guild, Islanders group, OBERIU (Union of Realistic Art) Literary Group, visited Vocal Shell young poets association, entered the circle of M.M. Bakhtin and L.V. Pumpyansky. Vaginov's poetic creativity and his novels Goat Song (1928), Works and Days of Svistunov (1929), Bambochada (1931) continued and developed the tradition of the so-called Petersburg text of Russian literature of the 19th century. Vaginov depicted the decay of Petersburg culture and the death of its last representatives. Various traditions from antique prose and literature of the Renaissance to the Petersburg stories of N.V. Gogol and F.M. Dostoevsky merge in the metrical prose of Vaginov. He lived at 25 Liteiny Avenue (1899-1917), 105 Griboedova Canal Embankment (1920-34). He was buried at Smolenskoe Cemetery (the grave has not survived).

References: Васильев И. Е. Лики петербургской музы: Ахматова и Вагинов // Ахматовские чтения: А. Ахматова, Н.
