\n \n ANDREEV Leonid Nikolaevich (1871-1919, Navol's house, near Mustamyaka, Finland; today Gorkovskoe Village of Leningrad Region), writer, dramatist. In 1891 he entered Faculty of Law of Petersburg University (dismissed for non-payment), in 1893 transferred to Faculty of Law of Moscow University (graduated in 1897). Andreev's first collection of stories was published by M. Gorky in Petersburg, in Znanie publishing house in 1901. Later Andreev participated in Znanie collections on a regular basis (among the works published there, are: The Life of Vasily Fiveisky, a novel, 1904; Red Laugh, short story, 1905; To the Stars, drama, 1906; Judas Iscariot and Others, story, 1907, etc.). On visiting St. Petersburg he joined writers meetings, organised around the publishing house. From 1907 he had been an editor of Shipovnik publishing house almanacs (where he published among others: Darkness, 1907; A Story of Seven Hangmen, 1908, short stories, The Black Mask drama, 1908, etc.). He organised literaterary Wednesdays in his flat (13 Kamenoostrovsky Avenue; memorial plaque) in 1907-08, which were visited by A.A. Blok, A.L. Volynsky, F.Sologub, G.I. Chulkov, I.A. Bunin, et al. Andreev's plays were successfully staged in the Alexanderinsky Theatre and Komissarzhevsky Theatre (for example, the First Permanent Drama The Life of a Man, Komissarzhevsky Theatre, 1907, director V.E. Meyerhold). He was published in Zhurnal Dlya Vsekh, Zhizn, Russkoe bogatstvo journals, Russkaya volya newspaper, and others. Andreev's collected edition was published in St. Petersburg in 13 volumes (1911-13) and in 8 volumes (1913). From 1908 Andreev permanently lived in his Finnish house at Vammelsu Village (not preserved, today Serovo Village near Zelenogorsk). The original artistic system of Andreev is distinguished by its fixation on metaphysico-tragical themes, developed from a criticism of realism in his early period towards expressionism in the late period of creativity. He was fond of painting; exhibited in St. Petersburg at Exhibition of Independents (1913). In St. Petersburg he lived at 25 Sixth Line of Vasilievsky Island, at 23 Fourth Line of Vasilievsky Island, at 35 Kamennoostrovsky Avenue. He was buried at Vammelsu; in 1956 the ashes were reburied at Literatorskie Mostki.
