He was a great-grandson of Empress Catherine II, father of Count Alexei A. Bobrinsky. On graduating from St. Petersburg University (1846) he served in St. Petersburg provincial administration, was engaged in the affairs of city economy. In 1855 Bobrinsky was a combatant of St. Petersburg Volunteer Corps. In 1861-64, he was St. Petersburg civilian Governor, and member of the Curators' Council of the institutions of Empress Maria. During his service, St. Petersburg saw creation of the Okhtinskaya Alms-House (1862), kerosene street lighting was arranged, and horse-drawn trams were put in operation on Nevsky Prospect, Sadovaya Street and from the Palace Square to Vasilievsky Island. In 1869-72, he served as a Marshal of Noble Society of St. Petersburg. From 1896, he was a member of the State Council. He is the author of a large project entitled \"Noble Families in the Common Armorial of All Russia” (parts 1-2, St. Petersburg, 1890). He was the proprietor of the palace of the Bobrinsky family (58-60 Galernaya Street; built in the middle of the 18th century and rebuilt in 1792-96 by architect L. Rusca and in 1822-25 by architect A. A. Mikhailov II). Bobrinsky was buried in Nikolskoe Cemetery of Alexander Nevsky Lavra.<br/><br/>Reference: Длуголенский Я. Н.
