\n \n CHICHERIN Nikolay Ivanovich (1724-1782), statesman and combat leader, general en shef (1773). In 1737 he was registered in the Guards, in 1740 a batman of Anton Ulrich Duke of Brunswick. In 1742 he was transferred to the Army. Chicherin took part in the 7-year war of 1756-63. In 1764-77 Chief of the Police General in St. Petersburg (senator since 1766), a member of the Commission on the stone building of St. Petersburg and Moscow; in which capacity he participated in the elaboration of the general design plan of St. Petersburg development and provision of urban facilities. In these years the first stone bridges were built in St. Petersburg, the building of granite embankments started, a permanent street lighting was established, along with the regular sanitation; many streets were given names marked in Russian and German on special boards; a city cemetery at Okhta (1773; since 1775 Georgievskoe Cemetery) was also set up. After the disastrous flood of September of 1777, empress Catherine II accused Chicherin of sluggishness and loss of lives and dismissed him from the office. It was only due to the intercession of G.A. Potemkin that Chicherin was not tried, and managed to remain a senator. Chicherin was known for his great hospitality; he owned a house at 15 Nevsky Prospect (see Chicherin House). He was buried at Lazarevskoe Cemetery of Alexander Nevsky Lavra (the tomb not preserved).
