\n \n PETROGRADSKY DISTRICT, an administrative and territorial unit of St. Petersburg, with its administration located at 19 Bolshaya Monetnaya Street. The district was formed in 1917, and in 1936 the Primorsky District was separated from its territory. The Petrogradsky District exists with its present boundaries since 1973. The district got its name from Petrogradsky Island, and stretches across the islands of the Neva delta, including the Petrogradsky, Petrovsky, Zayachy, Krestovsky, Elagin, Kamenny and Aptekarsky Islands (see related articles). Linkage to the Tsentralny District is provided by the Troitsky Bridge, to Vasilievsky Island by the Birzhevoy and Tuchkov Bridges, to the Primorsky District by the Ushakovsky Bridge, and to the Vyborgsky District by the Kantemirovsky, Grenadersky, and Sampsonievsky bridges. As of 2003, the area has a population of 128.500 inhabitants on a territory of 20,5 square-km. The district consists of 6 municipal units, including Aptekarsky Island, the Petrovsky Municipal District, and Municipal Districts Nos 58, 59, 60 and 63. The district development started on 16 May 1703 with the laying of the St. Peter-and-Paul Fortress on Zayachy Island. It was under Peter the Great that Gorodskoy (today Petrogradsky) Island emerged as St. Petersburg's commercial and administrative centre. The territory was settled by artisans, salesmen and military men, and gradually settlements such as Grebetskaya, Rybatskaya, and Raznochinnaya sprung up. Intensive construction of residential and industrial facilities came under way in the late 19th - early 20th centuries, shaping the district's contemporary architectural look. Five metro stations serve the district, including Gorkovskaya, Petrogradskaya, Sportivnaya, Chkalovskaya and Krestovsky Ostrov. The islands are separated by rivers and canals, including the Malaya Nevka River and Srednyaya Nevka River, the Karpovka River, the Zhdanovka River, the Krestovka River, Kronverksky Strait, and Grebnoy Canal. Key thoroughfares include Kamennoostrovsky Avenue and Bolshoy Avenue of Petrogradskaya Side, Medikov Avenue, Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street, Zhdanovskaya Street, Kronverskaya Embankment and Pesochnaya Embankment, Admirala Lazareva Embankment, Kronverksky Avenue, Professora Popova Street, Petrovsky Avenue, and Morskoy Avenue. The district is characteristic by numerous cultural and entertainment landmarks and facilities, such as the Petrovsky and Kirov stadiums, the Yubileyny Sports Palace, the Central Park of Recreation and Culture, Primorsky Pobedy Park, the Baltiysky Dom (Baltic House) Theatre, the Music-Hall, the Zoo, the Planetarium, the Museum of Russian Political History, the Museum of Artillery, Engineering and Communication Troops, Peter the Great's Wooden Cabin, the memorial museum-apartments of Kirov, Pavlov, Popov, and Chaliapin, the Lensoveta House of Culture, a hotel and tourist complex, the Youth Palace, and the Central Yacht Club. The district has a large number of universities, science and research institutes, including the Pavlov Medical University, the Institute of Precision Mechanics and Optics, the Chemical Pharmaceutical Academy, the Mozhaysky Military Cosmonautics Engineering University, the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation and its Botanical Garden, the Science and Research Institute of Experimental Medicine, the Leningrad Civil Construction Research and Design Institute, and others. A number of important administrative entities are located in the district, including the premises of the Plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in the North-West Federal District, the St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region Federal Road Safety Service Administration, and the St. Petersburg State Statistics Committee. The industrial section is represented by large enterprises such as the Almaz Shipbuilding Plant, the Rigel Battery Plant, the Mint, the Pechatny Dvor Printing House, the Krasnogvardeets and Lenpoligrafmash plants, and others. Over 300 architectural and historic monuments under state protection are concentrated in the district, including the Peter and Paul Fortress complex, the Kamennoostrovsky and Elagin palaces, the Cathedral of Prince St. Vladimir, Kronwerk, Mosque, a monument to the Steregushchy submarine, the Aurora cruiser, and a number of others.
