(Its territory administration is located at 55 Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island) Its present-day borders were formed in 1917 (the western part was a separate Sverdlovsky District in 1936-61.) The district covers the territory of Vasilievsky Island (hence, the name) and Dekabristov Island. Vasilievsky Disrict is connected to Central District with Dvortsovy Bridge, and to Admiralteysky District - with Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge, and to Petrogradsky District - with Birzhevoy and Tuchkov bridges. The area of the district is 19.8 sq.km. Its population is 191,300 people (2003). The district includes five municipal units: Morskoy Okrug (administrative division) and municipal okrugs Nos. 7, 8, 9, 11. Until the middle of the 19th century, the district was built up mostly with wooden buildings; areas of Gavan (Harbour) and present-day Dekabristov Island had vast waterlogged wastelands. The eastern part of the district was wholly built up in the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. An industrial area was formed to the southwest. In 1911-13, a new residential district New Petersburg was under construction in the western part of Goloday Island (today, Dekabristov Island). The Harbor and Dekabristov Island were built up in 1950s. After the soil inwash, new residential quarters appeared in the north-western part of the district. Important units of a new city sea facade include Morskoy Marine Passenger Terminal and the Pribaltiyskaya Hotel. Two metro stations are located in the district - Vasileostrovskaya and Primorskaya. Main thoroughfares include Bolshoy, Sredny and Maly Avenues of Vasilievsky Island, Nalichnaya Street, Korablestroiteley Street, and Makarova Embankment, Universitetskaya Embankment and Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment. The district houses a lot of educational institutions and research institutes, including St. Petersburg State University, Repin Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, Plekhanov College of Mines, St. Petersburg RAS Science Centre, Institute of Russian Literature (The House of Pushkin), Research Institute, the Arctic and the Antarctic Research Institute, Vavilov State Optic Institute, et al. Cultural and recreational objects include the Naval Museum, the Anthropology and Ethnography Museum named after Peter the Great (the Kunstkammer), the Zoological Museum, the Menshikov Museum, the Lenexpo Exhibition Complex, et al. Over 40 industrial enterprises are located here, including the Baltic Factory, the Steel Mill, Sevkabel, Electroapparat, the Kozitsky Factory, et al. Among historical and cultural monuments under state protection are the Rostrum Columns, the Exchange, the Building of the Twelve Collegiums, the Menshikov Palace, Academy of Arts, St. Andrew's Cathedral, the Rumyantsev's Obelisk, the wharf with sphinxes in front of Academy of Arts, the monument to Ivan Krusenstern, historical burial places at the Smolensky Cemeteries, et al. The monument to Andrey Sakharov was opened in 2003.

References: Даринский А. В. Невский край: С.-Петербург и Ленингр. обл.: Природа. Население. Хоз-во. Р-ны.
