He graduated from Artillery school and Engineering school in St. Petersburg (1759). Kutuzov took part in the Polish campaigns of 1764-65 and 1768-70, the Russo-Turkish wars of 1768-74, 1787-91 and 1806-1812 (in 1811-12 he was made a commander-in-chief), wars with France in 1805 (commander-in-chief) and 1812-13. In 1793-94 he was an ambassador in Constantinople; in 1794-97 the chief head master of Gentry Army Cadet Corps school in St. Petersburg (he gave a course of tactics and military history there). At the same time, in 1795-96, Kutuzov was in command of the army in Finland. In 1801-02 the military governor-general of St. Petersburg. In 1802-05 he was in retirement. In the beginning of the Patriotic war of 1812 he was elected the commander of St. Petersburg province levy, on August 8 he was appointed the commander-in-chief of all Russian armies; he conducted the battles of Borodino, Maloyaroslavets, and others, the pursuit of the retreating enemy. In the beginning of the campaign of 1813 he was put in charge of the united Russian-Prussian army. Kutuzov died in Bunzlau (today Boleslawiec, Poland) and was buried in the Kazan Cathedral. The name of Kutuzov was granted to Kutuzovskaya Embankment in 1945 (a memorial plaque has been put on the house No. 30). In 1837 a monument to Kutuzov was opened in front of the Kazan Cathedral (sculptor B.I. Orlovsky, architect V.P. Stasov). The name of Kutuzov has also been inscribed on the memorial plate commemorating the graduates of Artillery and Engineering school (12 Krasnogo Kursanta Street).
