Several family members were closely associated with St. Petersburg. Sergey Grigorievich Stroganov (1707-56) was a Baron (1722), Lieutenant General (1754), a collector of arts masterpieces, and founder of the Stroganov Picture Gallery. The Stroganov Palace was built by his order (17 Nevsky Prospect), in which his descendants lived until 1917. His son was Alexander Sergeevich Stroganov (1734-1811, St. Petersburg) Count of the Holy Roman Empire (1761), Count of the Russian Empire (1798), and First rank Actual Privy Counsellor (1811). He was Marshal of the Nobility of the St. Petersburg Province (1784-1811), President of the Academy of Arts (1800-11), Director of the Imperial Public Library (1800-11), Member of the Standing Assembly (1804), and directed the construction of the Kazan Cathedral (1801-1811; he died after catching a cold at its consecration ceremony). He continued his father's collection and organisation of the picture gallery. His son, Count Pavel Alexandrovich Stroganov (1774-1817), was a state and military figure, Privy Counsellor (1802), Lieutenant General (1812), a member of the circle of the so-called Emperor Alexander I's young friends, an active participant of the development of the reform plans of state Government boards in the early 19th century, Secretary of the Private Committee, Deputy Minister of the Interior (1802-07), Senator (1807), and a participant of both the Patriotic War of 1812 and the foreign campaigns of 1813-14. He was buried at the Lazarevskoe Cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Other famous members of the family include Alexander Grigorievich Stroganov (1795, St. Petersburg - 1891), Count (1826) and Infantry General (1856). In 1839-41, he was Minister of Internal Affairs, Member of the State Assembly (from 1839), Member of the Committee for the Construction of the St. Isaac's Cathedral (1853), and Military Governor of the Petersburg and Vasilievsky Island Units of St. Petersburg (1854). His brother, Sergey Grigorievich Stroganov (1794-1882, St. Petersburg), was a Count (1818), archaeologist and numismatist, collector of arts masterpieces (including Russian icons), and a Cavalry General (1852). He was a member of the Schools Committee (1826-35), a member of the State Assembly (from 1847), Honorary Member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1827), Honorary Member of St. Petersburg University (1837), and tutor to Tsesarevitch Nicholas Alexandrovich (1860-65). He organised the Archaeological Committee and was its first President (1859-82). Materials found at digs organised by the Committee laid the foundation of the Hermitage's Kerch and Scythian collections. The Stroganov family burial vault is located at Church of Our Lady Fedorovskaya at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra (many of the family members were buried at the Lazarevskoe Cemetery).

References: Онучин А.
