Several family members are closely connected with St. Petersburg. Boris Petrovich Sheremetev (1652-1719) was a Count (1706), an associate of Peter the Great's, a Chamber Boyar (1686), and a Field Marshal General (1701). On 1 May 1703, he forced the Swedish fortress Nyen (Nyenschantz) to surrender; on 16 May of the same year, he took part in the foundation of St. Petersburg. By order of Peter the Great, he was buried at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. His son was Peter Borisovich Sheremetev (1713-88), whose posts and ranks included General en Chef (1760), Adjutant General (1760), Arch-Chamberlain (1761), Gentleman in Waiting at Princess Anna Leopoldovna's Chamber (1739), and Senator (1762); he was a childhood friend of Emperor Peter II's, and retired in 1768. Peter Sheremetev owned the Fontanny House (34 Fontanka River Embankment; see Sheremetev Palace), which passed on to his descendants. His great-grandson was Sergey Dmitrievich Sheremetev (1844-1918), a historian and genealogy expert, a public figure, a Chief Master of the Hunt (1904), and an Honorary Fellow of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1890). He also served as Colonel of the Life Guards Cavalry Regiment (1874-84), Director of the Court Chapel (1883-94), Member of State Assembly (1900), and Chairman of the Archaeographic Commission (1900-17). He was a Founding Member (1877) of the Society of Friends for Ancient Literature, which he presided over from 1888; he was also the Chair of the Society of Lovers of Russian Historical Education in Memory of Emperor Alexander III (1896), and the Russian Genealogical Society (1898). He wrote a memoir, the latest edition of which appeared in 2001 (Count S.D. Sheremetev's Memoirs, Moscow, 2001). Representing another branch of the family was Vasily Alexandrovich Sheremetev (1795-1862, St. Petersburg), Full Privy Councillor (1857), Civil Governor of St. Petersburg (1841-43), Deputy Minister of Justice (1845-47, de facto Deputy Minister from 1843), and an Honorary Trustee of the St. Petersburg Office of the Board of Trustees (1847-62). Vasily Sheremetev controlled the Loan Treasury of the St. Petersburg Orphans' Hospital (1848-56). In 1856-57, he was Minister of Public Property, and in 1857, joined the State Assembly. The Sheremetev family vault is situated at the St. Lazar Church at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.

References: Павленко Н. И. Птенцы гнезда Петрова. М., 1994; Краско А. В.
