\n \n DASHKOVA (nee Vorontsova) Ekaterina Romanovna (1744 - 1810 , St. Petersburg),duchess and patroness of science and education. A member of the Vorontsov family. She was a participant of the Court Revolt of 1762 and supporter of Empress Catherine II. In 1783-94, she became the director of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (managed its organisation, economic, publishing and cartography work, involving the mapping of the Russian Empire) and president of Russian Academy. She organised the compilation and publication of the Dictionary of the Russian Academy (vol. 1-6, 1789-94), which was the first concise academic dictionary of the Russian language; published journals Sobesednik Lyubiteley Russkogo Slova and Rossiisky Featr. She was the author of several literary works; the most famous of them is Proceedings (republished several times). Dashkova's summer cottage (today 45 Stachek Avenue) was one of the centres of St. Petersburg cultural life during the second half of the 18th century. Dashkova's figure is depicted at the pedestal of the monument to Catherine II.
