\n \n SHUVALOV Ivan Ivanovich (1727-1797, St Petersburg), count, statesman, Adjutant-General (1760), Chief Chamberlain. Member of the Conference of the Supreme Court. Enjoyed the favor of Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, exercised extraordinary influence on Russian foreign and home policy. Founder of the Academy of Arts (1757). Took part in the publishing of the Interlocutor for Lovers of the Russian Word. A patron and friend of M. V. Lomonosov, A. P. Sumarokov, G. R. Derzhavin, A. A. Khrapovitsky, and other Russian culture and science figures. A connoisseur and collector of works of art. Donated part of his collection to the Academy of Arts in 1758, which became the basis of the Academy Museum. Under Empress Catherine II, he was retired, and in 1763 was into honorary exile; living abroad, he patronised students retained and sent abroad by the Academy of Arts, collected and sent to St Petersburg casts from antique sculptures for the Academy of Arts. In 1777, he was allowed to return to Russia and appointed Senator. In St Petersburg, he lived in his palace at 25 Italyanskaya Street (see Shuvalov Palace). Buried at the Blagoveschenskaya Burial Vault at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
