The name originated from Vyborgskaya Side in 1887. It included the present-day Pirogovskaya Embankment and Ushakovskaya Embankment until 1979-89. The adjacent area was an area for public recreation in the early 19th century. Former N. I. Golovin's dacha (house 63) has been preserved. It was built by architect L. I. Charlemagne in 1823-24. The embankment was mainly built up with industrial buildings in the second half of the 19th and 20th centuries. House 43 built by architect Z. A. Gustavson in 1911 accommodated a plant of the Russian Society for the Manufacture of Shells and Ammunition; house 47 built by architect N. V. Vasilyev in 1911 as Nevka Thread Factory now accommodates Krasnaya Nit Complex; houses 55 to 59 built by civil engineer Vasily A. Kosyakov in the 1890s as Nikolskaya Manufactory of Voronin, Lutsch, and Chesher Joint-Stock Company now accommodate Krasny Mayak Complex. House 61 was erected in 1980s to accommodate a design research institute. It now also houses Akvatoria Business Centre. Vyborgskaya Embankment is a part of a speedway. Road junctions were built by Grenadersky Bridge and Kantemirovsky Bridge in 1980-90s.

Reference: Штиглиц М. С. Промышленная архитектура Петербурга. 2-е изд., испр. и доп.
