Korpijoki, which means Forest River or Crow River), a river, separating Petrogradsky Island and Aptekarsky Island. The river is 3 kilometres long. The left-bank embankments begin from Petropavlovskaya Street, while those on the right bank start from Aptekarskaya Embankment and continue past Karpovsky Bridge. In the first quarter of the 18th century the site of the house No. 4 on the left bank of the river was occupied by the manor estate of Theophan (Prokopovich). In 1835, St. Peter and Paul Hospital, now I.P. Pavlov Medical University, was opened in this area. On the right bank of the river, opposite the university, the Botanical Gardens are situated. Among the buildings situated on the embankments of the river the following are worthy of mention: house No. 6 (1912, architect V.K. Weis); house No. 13, the first residential building built by the Leningrad Soviet (1935, architects Е. А. Levinson, I.A. Fomin); house No. 15, the transformer sub-station of the tramway and a residential building (1907), and house No. 19 (1913, both pertain to the work of architect A.I. Zazersky); house No. 25 (1907, architect N.P. Kozlov), the Northern Crown Hotel (the 1990s, architects М. А. Reinberg, A.I. Pribulsky); house No. 45, St. John Convent (1900-08, architect N.N. Nikonov). Actor Y.M. Yuriev (house No. 13, 1937-48) and writer E.I. Zamyatin (house No. 19, 1917-22) used to live at Karpovka River Embankment; in 1917 V.I. Lenin visited the house No. 25 and the house No. 32. In the 1960s-90s, the banks of the river were faced with granite. Several bridges span the river: Aptekarsky Bridge, Petropavlovsky Bridge, Silin Bridge, Geslerovsky Bridge, Karpovsky Bridge, Barochny Bridge and Molodezhny Bridge.

References: Исаченко В.
