\n \n KIROVSKAYA SQUARE, located at the intersection of Stachek Avenue and Shvetsova Street. Created in the 1930s as an administrative centre for the Moskovsko-Narvsky (since 1934, Kirovsky) District, according to a plan design by architect L.A. Ilyin (1924), intending to create two squares (Stachek Square and Kirovskaya Square) joined by a common longitudinal axis, emphasized by the Narvskie Triumphal Arch. Named after S.M. Kirov. The architectural centre of Kirovskaya Square is the Kirovsky District Soviet Building (18 Stachek Avenue), a striking example of the Constructivist Style (1930-35, architect N.A. Trotsky). Its tower, 50 meters high, dominates the visual surroundings. Its semicircular convention hall was converted into a cinema hall in 1958 (architects V.V. Khazanov and L.A. Pankratova). In 1938, a monument to S.M. Kirov was unveiled on Kirovskaya Square. In 1949-50, a residential building for the workers of the Kirov Plant was constructed (16 Stachek Avenue, architects Y.Y. Macheret, V.A. Kamensky), closing off the square from the north and giving a strong background to the S.M. Kirov monument.
