The avenue was laid in the 18th century and led towards Pargolovo (hence the original name). It was given its present-day name in commemoration of M. Thorez, a French communist leader (1900-64). Until the 1960s, the development of the avenue consisted of wooden and stone buildings comprising of one or two stories. Some buildings pertaining to the early 20th century can still be found here: house No. 8, the former mansion of D.A. Kotlov (1913-14, civil engineer N.I. Tovstoles), as well as houses Nos. 29, 65 and 89. In 1963, Toreza Avenue started to be built over with multi-storied residential-houses with the preservation of the existing landscape (the project was directed by architect V.F. Belov). In the 1980s, houses Nos. 35-39 were built for the members of the Academy of Sciences (architects N.I. Apostol, V.M. Tverye). Part of Toreza Avenue runs along the park of Sosnovka. Toreza Avenue accommodates I.M. Sechenov Scientific Research Institute for Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry (house No. 44). Next to the institute, a bust of L.A. Orbeli was set up in 1969 (sculptor D.M. Epifanov, architect L.L. Schreter). House No. 64 represents one of the buildings of Svetlana open joint-stock corporation company (the 1960s, architects G.V. Kostyurin, R.K. Dineyka, engineer A.D. Nelipa; the flank side of the building has the artistic composition Electronics, 1978, sculptor V.G. Kozenyuk). 68 Toreza Avenue is the address for the Electron Scientific Research Institute, while house No. 72 is the Clinical Hospital of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1976-77, architects I.A. Fabritsky et al.).

References: Кузнецов А. И. Район-сад на Выборгской стороне: Застройка проспектов Тореза и Шверника // СиАЛ. 1973. № 5. С. 2-6; Лисовский В. Г. Ленинград: Р-ны новостроек.
