In 1972 the avenue incorporated the length of the road running from Detskaya Street to Nalichnaya Street, previously known as Malogavansky Avenue. Sredny Avenue was extended in the 1720s. The most part of the buildings pertaining to the turn of the 19th-20th centuries consists of apartment houses. Among the buildings of Sredny Avenue, the following should be distinguished: house No. 17 (Brullov family house, first half of the 18th century); house No. 18, formerly St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church (engineer K. Bulmering, the 1870s); house No. 14 (1907, architect F.A. Korzukhin); house No. 24 (Aladov's house, the 1800s); house No. 31 (1897, architect A.R. Gerschwend); house No. 45 and house No. 47 (1915 and 1911, architect A.F. Baranovsky); house No. 53 (1912, architects S.S. Serafimov, I.A. Pretro); house No. 48, comprising a building for a theatre (1892, architect A.F. Krasovsky); house No. 74, former Geological Committee, present-day Karpinsky Institute of Geology; No. 77, the tramway depot of Vasilievsky Island (1907); house No. 82, the Institute of Mining Geomechanics and Mine Surveying (1956, architect B.M. Serebrovsky). House No. 4 accommodates Giprotsement State Institute for the Designing for the Cement Industry; No. 86, houses the Aluminium-Magnesium Institute, while No. 87 is a swimming-pool. Among the residents of Sredny Avenue of Vasilievsky Island were: A.P. Gannibal (on the site of house No. 11, the 1740s), artist A.G. Venetsianov (house No. 44, the 1830s), I.P. Pavlov (house No. 7/46, 1870-71), P.L. Chebyshev (house No. 10/25, the 1840s), A.N. Pypin (house No. 13/41, 1895-1904), I.N. Kramskoy (house No. 28, 1863), P.A. Fedotov (house No. 56, the 1840s).
