The avenue was laid in the 1740s according to a project planned by the Commission for the Building of St. Petersburg, which allowed city-dwellers to develop country houses along the bank of the Fontanka River in the first quarter of the 18th century (hence the name, which means \"beyond the city\"). Starting in the second half of the 18th century, the avenue was built up with stone buildings. Zagorodny Avenue accommodated the barracks of the Semenovsky Life Guards Regiment (houses Nos. 46, 48, 50, which have been rebuilt), and the nearby Semenovsky Parade-Ground. In 1829-31, the Technological Institute was constructed (house No. 49, architects A.I. Postnikov, E.H. Ahnert); in 1836-39, the female ward of the Obukhovskaya Hospital was built (house No. 47, architect P.S. Pavlov; presently a Military Medical Academy clinic). In 1837, the Tsarskoselsky (present-day Vitebsky) Railway Station was opened (house No. 52, modern building from 1901-04, main architect S.A. Brzhozovsky). In 1859, the St. Petersburg Handicraft Society Building was erected (house No. 2, architect A.I. Lange); in 1903, the Commercial School apartment houses (house No. 13, architects A.I. Bogdanov and N.I. Bogdanov); and in 1910, the Bourgeois Society apartment houses (houses Nos. 31 and 33, architect N.K. Pryanishnikov). Several apartment buildings were built in 1885-86, including V.A. Ratkov-Rozhnov\"s apartment house according to a project planned by architect L.N. Benois (house No. 39). At the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, the present-day intersection of Zagorodny Avenue, Razyezhzhaya Street, Rubinshteina Street and Lomonosova Street was built up (see Five Corners) to form an architectural ensemble. In the early 20th century, Zagorodny Avenue was built up with many-storeyed apartment houses, including house No. 21-23 (1901, architect N.P. Basin), house No. 44 (1903, architect L.P. Shishko), house No. 11 (1914, architect A.L. Lishnevsky). House No. 27 was built specifically for manufacturer I.E. Kuznetsov in 1916 (architects B.M. Velikovsky, A.V. Rosenberg; the building presently houses the Jazz Philharmonic Hall). The Fire-Station was built in 1930-31 (house No. 56, architect I.G. Kaptsyug). Past residents of Zagorodny Avenue include A.A. Delwig (houses Nos. 1 and 9), A.G. Rubinstein (house No. 5), T.G. Shevchenko (house No. 8), K.A. Varlamov (house No. 13), S.A. Vengerov (house No. 21), S.P. Botkin (house No. 24), P.I. Tchaikovsky (house No. 25), N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov (house No. 28, presently his Memorial Apartment-Museum), and M.I. Glinka (house No. 42). From 1905 to 1917, N.F. Tselibeev\"s apartment house accommodated the Women\"s Polytechnic Courses, headed by professor N.L. Shchukin, \"the father of the Russian steam-locomotive\". The Priboy (Surf) publishing house was located in house No. 17, the editorial board of the Novy Zhurnal Dlya Vsekh journal in house No. 36, and the editorial board of the Pravda journal in house No. 21.

References: Жаров С.
