\n \n DOBROLYUBOVA AVENUE, running from Kronverksky Avenue to Bolshoy Avenue of the Petrogradskaya Side. Laid in the 1860s along the route of a filled-in section of the Zhdanovka River. In 1871 it was called Alexandrovsky Avenue, in honour of Emperor Alexander II, and renamed in memory of N.A. Dobrolyubov in 1923. In the early 20th century, most of the avenue was built up with apartment houses, including house No. 3 (1906, engineer I.L. Balbashevsky, facades designed by architect L.A. Ilyin), house No. 8 (1902, architect M.I. Kitner), house No. 9 (1905, architect V.P. Kondratyev), houses Nos. 13 and 15 (1902, architect K.V. Baldi), and house No. 19 (1915, architect Y.G. Gevirtz). Yubileyny Sports Palace was opened at Dobrolyubova Avenue in 1967 (house No. 18, architects G.P. Morozov, I.P. Suslikov, engineer A.P. Morozov); thirty years later the Sportivnaya Metro Station went into operation next to the complex. One of the focal points of the avenue's view is the St. Prince Vladimir Cathedral. House No. 14 accommodates the Prikladnaya Khimiya (Applied Chemistry) State Scientific Centre of the Russian Federation. Past residents of Dobrolyubova Avenue include mineralogist A.E. Fersman (house No. 1, 1912-19), electrical engineer H.O. Graftio (house No. 15, 1914-29), chemist S.V. Lebedev, artist A.P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva (house No. 21), and electrical engineer M.P. Kostenko (house No. 21A, 1919-76).
