\n \n VOZNESENSKY AVENUE, translated as Ascension Avenue, between Admiralteisky Avenue and Fontanka River Embankment. It was laid in the early 18th century. It runs towards the tower of the Main Admiralty and crosses St Isaac’s Square. It was named after the Holy Ascension Church (not preserved) and was also renamed as Third Admiralteiskaya Street in the late 18th century and Mayorova Avenue in memory of P. V. Mayorov (1889-1919), a veteran of the Civil War, in 1923-91. It was built up with residential and non-residential houses in the 18th-20th centuries. House 78/25 was built between the late 18th century and the early 19th century; house 28 was built by architect B. Spindler in 1840; house 33 was built in 1830-40s; house 41 was built in 1843; house 53 was built by architect I. A. Zim in 1843; house 18 was built by civil engineers V. V. Gusev and K. K. Meybom in 1907. The House of Light Industry was erected by architects E. A. Levinson and I. I. Fomin in 1932-35 at 44-46 Voznesensky Avenue in place of Novo-Alexandrovsky Market that was built in 1867 and was the largest market in St. Petersburg in the early 20th century. Buses started running through Voznesensky Avenue and neighbouring streets in 1907. Among avenue residents were F. M. Dostoevsky who lived in house 8 and wrote his White Nights in 1847, philosopher V. S. Solovyev who lived in house 10 in 1897. The Free Society for Lovers of the Russian Word held its meetings in house 41, which were attended by F. N. Glinka, A. A. Delwig, V. K. Kuchelbecker, et al. People\"s Will had its secret address at 78/25 Voznesensky Avenue in 1881. Composer M. A. Balakirev who lived in house 47 in 1860-61, V. G. Korolenko lived in house 49 in 1873, and artist N. K. Curlenis lived in house 57 in 1909. Artist I. E. Repin and poet A. N. Maykov visited house 81. A composition in memory of N. V. Gogol\"s Nose by architect V. B. Bukhaev and artist R. L. Gabriadze was placed at 36/11 Voznesensky Avenue in 1995. Astoria Hotel, Mariinsky Palace, and Maximilianovskaya Hospital situated in house 19 all face onto Voznesensky Avenue.
