\n \n VLADIMIRSKY AVENUE, a part of Liteiny Avenue in 1739-1860 also named Vladimirskaya Street from the late 18th century and Nakhimsona Avenue in 1918-44. It runs between Vladimirskaya Square and Nevsky Avenue. Its name originates from the Church of Our Lady of Vladimir. The avenue was laid in 1740s as an extension of Liteiny Avenue. It was designed by the Commission for St. Petersburg Buildings, the design approved in 1739. In 1918-1944, it was named after revolutionary S. M. Nakhimson (1885-1918). The avenue is part of the inner ring road. Horse trams started operating through the avenue in 1870s. Trams operated from 1908. It was developed from the 18th century to the early 20th century. House 3 formerly was P. I. Likhachev's house built in the late 18th century and rebuilt by architect A. H. Pehl in 1859; house 12 built by architect A. A. Mikhailov, in 1826-28 belonged to Korsakov, then accommodated the Merchants' Club, and now houses Lensoveta Theatre; houses 9/13 and 15 built in the 1830s-40s belonged to B. A. Frederiks; house 14 built in 1833 and rebuilt by civil engineer A. I. Nosalevich accommodated Capital's Pawnshop; house 17 was built in 1825-26; and house 19 built in 1904 is a striking example of the Northern Art Nouveau. House 47/1 accommodated Palkin's Restaurant. Among residents of Vladimirsky Avenue were K. N. Batyushkov and E. A. Baratynsky who lived in house 4 in 1813 and 1820s, respectively; N. S. Leskov in house 3 in 1863; F. M. Dostoevsky and D. V. Grigorovich in house 11 in 1842-46 and 1843-45, respectively; A. V. Nikitenko and N. G. Chernyshevsky in house 13 in 1840s; and N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov in house 18 in 1883-89.
