\n \n ADMIRALTEISKY AVENUE (Admiralty Avenue) in the mid-to-late 18th century - Admiralteiskaya Street or Bolshaya Street, in 1918-44 - Roshalya Avenue in honour of revolutionary S. G. Roshal (1896-1917). A link between Palace Square and St. Isaac’s Square, the avenue is included in the group of central squares of St. Petersburg. It was laid as the boundary for the former Admiralteiskaya Square in the second half of the 18th century as designed by the Commission for Stone Buildings of St. Petersburg and Moscow with A. V. Kvasov as chief architect. The avenue faces the Main Admiralty (hence the name) that was separated from the buildings by Admiralteisky Canal. The canal was partly filled up in 1819 with Admiralteiskaya Alley and, later, Alexandrovsky Garden laid out on its location. Two important buildings in the panorama of the avenue are St. Isaac's Cathedral and house 2/6 with a colonnade, which was built by architect G. Quarenghi as I. F. Vietinghof's house in 1788-90. It later accommodated government offices, city administration, and the All-Russian Extraordinary Commission with F. E. Dzerzhinsky at the head in the late 1917 to the early 1918. Today, it houses the Museum of History of Political Police. House 8 built in 1780-90 belonged first to G. I. Shcherbakov, later to I. P. Kutaysov, and then to G. P. Gambs. It was redesigned by architect G. G. von Goli in 1899. House 12 (see Lobanov-Rostovsky's house) was built in 1817-20 with marble lions by sculptor P. Triscorni installed in front of it and immortalised by A. S. Pushkin in his Bronze Horseman. Admiralteisky Avenue is an important artery of the city centre that had a tram line in 1907-96. London Hotel was situated in place of house 1/4 in the early 19th century. House 10 lodged architect G. E. Bosse in 1850s and artist I. N. Kramskoy in 1866-70 and accommodated the Artel of Artists too.
