\n \n PODYACHESKAYA BOLSHAYA STREET located between Griboedova Canal and the Fontanka River. The name was given in the second half of the 18th century after the occupation of its residents - podyachie (petty officers). The street was developed in the late 18th - early 19th century: building 3 (early 19th century), building 5 (late 18th century, overbuilt in 1835 by architect A. Lamoni), building 6 (1831, architect V.O. Mochulsky), building 19/10 (early 19th century, overbuilt in 1914), building 20 (the decor hall of the Board of Imperial Theatres, 1839-40, architect A.K. Cavos, reconstructed in 1885 by architect V.A. Schreter), building 27/114 - Podyacheskaya transformer substation of the city tramway (1906, civil engineer L.B. Gorenberg), building 29/116 (1841, architect Z.F. Krasnopevkov). The golden cupola of St. Isaac's Cathedral completes the perspective of Podyacheskaya Bolshaya Street. In the 19th - early 20th centuries, building 39 housed the Obshchestvennaya Polza Printing-House and the library, founded by writer and bibliographer N.A. Rubakin, building 22 was occupied with the printing-house of K.L. Pyatkovsky. In building 12, writer I.S. Turgenev lived in 1846-47.
