The road ran along the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland in place of the present-day Staro-Petergofsky Avenue, Stachek Avenue, and Petergofskoe Freeway. Soon after founding St. Petersburg, Tsar Peter the Great dispensed the land along the road for his confidants to build dachas \"for their amusement\" there. Seaside estates sprang up in the 1700s-10s. Among them were Ekaterinhof, Annenhof, Elizavethof, Strelna, etc. that belonged to Peter the Great and his family, as well as Favourite, Mon Courage, and Oranienbaum granted to A. D. Menshikov. There were as many as 86 places given out along Petergofskaya Road in the first quarter of the 18th century. Their owners were often replaced. A number of estate ensembles appeared in the 18th century including Admiral F. M. Apraksin's dacha handed over to Admiral P. I. Sivers in 1728. It was rebuilt by architect F. Rastrelli in 1750s at the present-day 158 Stachek Avenue. The land owned by Feofan (Prokopovich) that lay between Peterhof and Oranienbaum passed to the Crown in 1740. Grand Princess Elizaveta Petrovna's Own Dacha was built on the land, which was rebuilt by architect Y. M. Felten in 1770s and completely reconstructed by architect A. I. Stakenschneider in the mid 19th century. It is situated at 84 Sobstvenny Avenue. Count P. A. Rumyantsev's estate was situated west of the Personal Dacha (see Sergievka). In the second half of the 18th century, San Souci Dacha by architect P. Paton and Empress Catherine II's Bronnaya Dacha by architect A. F. Kokorinov were built not far from Oranienbaum in 1861 and 1860s, respectively, neither have been preserved though. Fragments of some dachas and villas remained at the head of the road including the Stroganov family's estate at 20 Staro-Petergofsky Avenue, E. R. Dashkova's Kiryanovo at 45 Stachek Avenue, R. I. Vorontsov's estate at 186 Stachek Avenue (see Vorontsov Family), I. G. Chernyshev's Alexandrino at 226 Stachek Avenue, the Sheremetev family's Ulyanka with Y. A. Bruce's dacha park between Dachny Avenue and Leni Golikova Street, and parks of E. E. Ebsworth, R. R. Chidson, N. Y. Trubetskoy, A. V. Makarov, the Vielgorsky Family (Pavlino), Y. F. von Moller, and P. M. Tolstoy all situated on the left side of Petergofskoe Freeway. A number of residences such as Znamenka and Mikhailovka were erected for Grand Princes and Princesses in the environs of Peterhof in the mid-19th century.

References: Столпянский П. Н.
