First - Seventh Krasnoarmeiskaya Streets are located between Moskovsky Avenue and Izmailovsky Avenue; Eighth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street, Ninth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street, Eleventh Krasnoarmeiskaya Street, and Thirteenth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street are between Izmailovsky Avenue and Lermontovsky Avenue; Tenth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street and Twelfth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street are situated between Izmailovsky Avenue and Drovyanaya Street. The streets were constructed in 1739-43 as part of the Life Guard's Izmailovsky Regiment settlement, and, in 1826, were named Roty (Russian for \"Regiment\") according to the number of the regiment quartered there. The settlement's centre was the Holy Trinity Cathedral (7a Izmailovsky Avenue). In the early 19th century, the regimental quarters were built according to a project by architect A.D. Zakharov at the intersection where Izmailovsky Avenue met the company headquarters (since reconstructed). In the 18th - early 19th centuries, a regimental riding-hall was constructed (13 First Krasnoarmeiskaya Street). The majority of buildings date back to the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. In 1870-83, the Roman Catholic Archeparchy and the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption were constructed according to a project by architects V.I. Sobolshchikov and E.S. Vorotilov (11 First Krasnoarmeiskaya Street, the church has been partially rebuilt). A large building called the Affordable Housing Society for the Needy stands at 8 Second Krasnoarmeiskaya Street (1882-83, architects A.F. Krasovsky, V.R. Kurzanov). The construction of Prince P.G. Oldenburgsky's Orphans' Home, as well as a school and residential house for employees were carried out in several steps at 36 Twelfth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street (1860-61, architect G.H. Stegeman, 1887-96, architect V.V. Schaub, 1902, architect I.A. Pretro). On Tenth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street, architect A.V. Malov built the Women's Hand-Crafts School (building no. 22, 1881-82); the Industrial School of Tsesarevitch Nikolay is located on First Krasnoarmeiskaya Street (building no. 1, 1893-95); Second Vocational School on Eighth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street (building no. 3, 1898-1900). In 1881-83, the Civil Engineers Institute's main building was constructed (architects R.B. Bernhard and I.S. Kitner), then extended and partially rebuilt in 1899-1900 by architect A.P. Maximov (4 Second Krasnoarmeiskaya Street). Striking examples of the Art Nouveau style include the Pomeshchik Agricultural Society apartment house at 30 Seventh Krasnoarmeiskaya Street (1911-12, architect Y.Z. Bluvstein); the shopping center at 30 Fifth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street; the apartment house at 27 Sixth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street (1906 and 1910, architect N.D. Zakharov); building no. 13 on Sixth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street (1911-12, architect S.G. Ginger); architect N.V. Dmitriev's private residence at 1 Fifth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street (1910); and buildings nos. 6-8 on Seventh Krasnoarmeiskaya Street (1909-10, architect L.V. Kotov and M.A. Songailo). In 1894, architect S.P. Kondratyev built the Holy Trinity Cathedral Chapel (4a Izmailovsky Avenue). An interesting example of the area's industrial architecture is the Novopetergofskaya Transformer Substation of the City Tramway at 28 Eleventh Krasnoarmeiskaya Street (1906-07, architect A.I. Zazersky, engineer L.B. Gorenberg). Many prominent scientists and cultural figures lived near and around Krasnoarmeiskaya Street, including A.P. Borodin, I.A. Krylov, N.I. Novikov (buildings not preserved), chess player M.I. Chigorin (15 Ninth Krasnoarmeiskaya Street), F.M. Dostoevsky (5 Third Krasnoarmeiskaya Street, building not preserved; 11 Second Krasnoarmeiskaya Street). After the October Revolution of 1917, extensive improvements of the territory were carried out, and several new buildings appeared on Krasnoarmeiskaya Street.

V. G.
