The road was laid in the first half of the 18th century on the territory of the former Liteinaya (Artilleriiskaya) settlement (hence the first name). The street was then renamed after the Lutheran Church located there (see St. Anne's Lutheran Church), and again after M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin. In 1802-07, the Preobrazhensky Life Guard Regiment quarters and hospital were constructed (building no. 31-39, architect F.I. Volkov). The SS. Kosma & Damian Church of Life Guard Engineer Combat Battalion stood on the site of present-day school № 183 (building no. 28, 1876-79, architect M.E. Messmacher, demolished in the 1940s). The Sixth Engineer Combat Battalion was quartered in building no. 33. In the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries, Kirochnaya Street was built up with apartment houses. Buildings nos. 32 and 34 were constructed in 1881-1900 (architect P.Y. Suzor) for entrepreneur A.V. Ratkov-Rozhnov; building no. 43 houses the A.V. Suvorov Memorial Museum. Building no. 41 housed the Clinical Institute of Grand Princess Elena Pavlovna (1878-85, architect R.A. Gedike), which is today the Medical Academy for Postgraduate Education. Architect L.V. Rudnev lived in building no. 17, and surgeon V.A. Oppel in no. building 23 (memorial plaque installed). The left side Kirochnaya Street meets the Tavrichesky Gardens.

O. A.
