Lived in St. Petersburg since 1873. Grevs graduated from Larin Gymnasium (1879) and the Department of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University (1883). He was a professor at Higher Women's (Bestuzhev) courses (since 1892) and St. Petersburg University (since 1903). In 1905 he became one of the founders of Academic Union. In 1921-24, he headed the Humanitarian Department of Petrograd Scientific Research Excursion Institute; a member of the Central Regional Study Bureau since 1925. In 1930 he was temporarily arrested in the case of Fellows of the Academy. He taught at the department of History of Leningrad State University since 1934 until his death. Grevs educated numerous outstanding mediaevalists and regional ethnographers (inter alia N.P. Antsiferov). In theory and practice he followed the so-called excursion method of teaching history (visual perception of history). Grevs authored works on the history of Roman landholding, medieval life and culture, and on the works of I.S. Turgenev; he was a founder of the City Studies discipline in our country. During various years he lived at 6 First Line of Vasilievsky Island; at 17 Sixth Line of Vasilievsky Island; at 60 Seventh Line of Vasilievsky Island; at 42 Eleventh Line of Vasilievsky Island,; at 21 Fourteenth Line of Vasilievsky Island,; at 40 Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street (at present, 42 Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street); at 31-33 Fourteenth Line of Vasilievsky Island; at 12 Tuchkova Embankment (at present, 20 Makarova Embankment). Since 1924 he lived at 48 Ninth Line of Vasilievsky Island.
