\n \n PUSHKIN SOCIETY based on the Society of Friends of the State Museum and Reserve Pushkin Corner in 1931 in order to study and popularise Russian classical literature of the 19th century, especially Alexander Pushkin's works. It united 540 members by 1935 with Academy member N. S. Derzhavin as the first president. Among members of the presidium were Pushkin scholars A. G. Yatsevich, L. R. Kogan, V. A. Manuylov, L. B. Modzalevsky, and G. F. Shiroky, writers Y. N. Tynyanov, E. P. Letkova-Sultanova, K. A. Fedin, and A. P. Chapygin, actress E. I. Time, and composer B. V. Asafyev. The society had a department for monument protection, art executive commission and publishing commission. It held discussions of new works on Pushkin studies, arranged seminars and literary soirees, etc., inspected Pushkin-associated buildings, and published over 20 books including works on Pushkin studies and the poet's own works. The society contributed to holding Pushkin Exhibitions in Moscow and Leningrad in 1937. Members of the society made appearances in hospitals and military units during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45. The society was disbanded for its engagement in the so-called Leningrad Case in 1952 as decreed by the regional committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
