Public food-service establishments where coffee, chocolate, ice-cream, fruits, and other sweets were served. Since the early 1810s, confectioner's shops gradually replaced \"sweet shops,\" offering various sweets for take-away. The owners of confectioner's shops were mainly foreigners. In the early 19th century, K. Lared's establishment (Lareda), near the beginning of Nevsky Prospect, was famous for its ice-cream with sponge cakes (habitues included A.S. Griboedov, V.A. Zhukovsky, A.I. Turgenev, S.S. Uvarov). Wolff et Beranget Confectionery was noted for its variety of sweets shaped like human figures, famous buildings, and portraits of well-known people. The A. Ambiel's establishments (Ambiela, then Kalaz, 42 Nevsky Prospect), Malinari and Aport also enjoyed great popularity; in the mid-19th century, shop belonging to Izler (formerly Ambiel's first garcon), D.I. Filippov (Filippovskaya, 45 Nevsky Prospect) and Dominic were particularly famous. Confectioner Pfeifer, opened near the Alexandrinsky Theatre, was the first to make various chocolate figures. In the 1910s the best confectioner's shops were located on Nevsky Prospect, including Abrikosov's (building No. 40, reopened under its previous name in 2002), F. Balas (building No. 54), De Gourmet (building No. 76), D.I. Kuznetsov's (building No. 92), Kurlyandskaya (building No. 116), Rabon (building No. 30), Conradi's (buildings Nos. 20, 36 and 106), Landrin's (buildings No. 46 and 64), and also on Bolshaya Morskaya Street and Malaya Morskaya Street. Some confectioner's shops sold alcoholic drinks (Naumov's, 23 Liteiny Avenue). After October 1917, confectioner's shops were either closed down or turned into street shops and cafes, losing their former ambience, assortment and regular customers. In the early 2000s, confectioner's shops started to reappear (Bouchee, Albina, Sweet Paradise, Domik Gnoma).

Reference: Петербург в 1831-1832 гг.: (По письмам провинциала) // Рус. старина. 1900.
