\n \n INSTITUTE OF EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE, a research institute situated at 12 Akademika Pavlova Street. It was founded by Prince A. P. Oldenburgsky as the Imperial Institute of Experimental Medicine in 1890 to become the first multifield medical and biological research centre (memorial plaque). It was renamed as the State Institute of Experimental Medicine in 1918, and reorganised into the All-Union Institute of Experimental Medicine in 1932. It was transferred to Moscow in 1934. Based on the institute, the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR was established in 1944 with a Leningrad Branch transformed into the Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. It received its present-day name in 1992. Over time, the institute's departments grew into the Institute of Vaccines and Serums, Influenza Institute, and the Institute of Human Brain. The institute carries out complex development projects in physiology, biochemistry, neuropharmacology, immunology, virology, molecular biology and genetics, and comprehensive study of atherosclerosis. The clinic's doctors work in close contact with scientific departments using their studies in diagnosis and treatment. The institute's history is associated with I. P. Pavlov and has a memorial plaque, memorial room, and bust devoted to him, M. W. Nentsky with a bust by sculptor A. Olunsky installed in the entrance hall of the biochemical department, N. O. Sieber-Shumova with a bas-relief sculpted by Olunsky in the same place, and E. S. London with a bust by sculptor M. G. Manizer installed in the institute area. Memorial plaques bear the names of N. N. Anichkov, S. V. Anichkov, D. A. Biryukov, K. M. Bykov, A. A. Zavarzin, V. I. Ioffe, P. S. Kupalov, and E. S. London. In one of the park alleys, there are busts of R. Descartes, C. Darwin, G. Mendel, L. Pasteur, I. M. Sechenov by sculptor I. F. Bezpalov, D. I. Mendeleev, and I. P. Pavlov by sculptors G. K. Bagramyan and V. L. Rybalko. There is also a monument to a dog sculpted by Bezpalov in 1935 with narrative bas-reliefs and texts written by I. P. Pavlov. The institute also has its own history museum.
