A. N. Veselovsky's student, he graduated from Petersburg University with a major in history and philology in 1897. He was a teacher at Bestuzhev's Higher Women Courses. From the early 1900s until his dying day, his education work was associated with Petersburg (Leningrad) University where he became a professor in 1918. In the late 1920s-1934, he was the dean of the department of linguistics at the Institute of History and Linguistics, renamed as the Institute of History, Philosophy, and Linguistics in 1933. He was the chairman of the Romance and German Languages Department in 1933-45 and the Department of Romance Languages in 1948-57. He also worked at various academic institutes in Leningrad and Moscow in the 1930s-40s. The founder of Romance philology in Russia, he wrote many key works on old French literature and history of French and other Romance languages. He was awarded a Lenin Prize in 1957. He lived at 31 Second Line of Vasilievsky Island in 1898-1922, 10 Third Line of Vasilievsky Island in 1922-27, 1 Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island in 1927-48 (memorial plaque), and 1 Leitenanta Shmidta Embankment. Buried at Komarovskoe Cemetery. Shishmarev Readings have been annually held at the Chair of Romance Philology of the Leningrad (St. Petersburg) State Institute since 1958.<br/><br/>References: Владимир Федорович Шишмарев.
