He graduated from the Technical Faculty of the University of Liege in 1912, but soon switched to humanities and started attending lectures on philology at the Sorbonne. From 1921, he worked (intermittently) as a research fellow at the Institute of Russian Literature at the Academy of Sciences. In 1946, he assumed the post of the head of the department for manuscripts there, transferred to the position of the head of the department of Pushkin studies in 1957. He also taught at various higher educational establishments, such as the Institute of the History of Arts (since 1921), State Leningrad University (since 1924, intermittently, appointed a professor in 1942), Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute, where he held the chair of Russian literature in 1941-42 and the chair of world literature in 1945-46, and gave lectures on higher mathematics at Leningrad Institute for Railroad Engineering (1932-35). An outstanding specialist in Pushkin studies and textual critic, he edited and annotated several editions of the complete works of A.S. Pushkin (including the complete academic edition), K.N. Batyushkov and A.A. Delwig. He also left works on the theory of literature. From the 1930s to 1950s Tomashevsky lived at 9 Griboedova Canal Embankment.

References: Борис Викторович Томашевский, 1890-1957: К 100-летию со дня рождения: Сб. М., 1991.

A. A.
