In 1797 graduated from the Naval Cadet School (17 Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment; memorial plaque); served in the Baltic Fleet. In 1819-21 led the round-the-world voyage on the vessels Vostok and Mirny (commander М.P. Lazarev), which resulted in the discovery of Antarctica (1820) and a number of islands in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. In 1839 was appointed military governor of Kronstadt and Commander-in-Chief of the Kronstadt Port. Lived and was buried in Kronstadt, where a monument dedicated to him was set up in 1870 (sculptor I.N. Schroder, architect I.A. Monighetti).<br/><br/>References: Есаков В. А.
